Many times we fall in love with a home for the amazing windows and light that a grand room offers. Two story walls of windows, open spances of glass bringing the outside in are so attractive and archtecturally appealing when we are deciding on a new home. In today's decorative quest for clean, simple, and a bit modern window coverings, Luminettes have a number of great choices for your windows. Corner Window Treatments for the Master Bedroom

Corner windows are always interesting to design. They offer a super source of light and often are included because of the architecture of the exterior of the house. Inside though, they are a source of puzzlement for many homeowners. That's when I am usually called into the scene.

This situation was no different. To add to the fun was the fact that the homeowner had recently purchased one of those super new mattresses that raised her bed so high that none of her bedding fit anymore, and nothing in her search for ready made came close.

First the windows. We decided to work with the corner with an asymmetrical design that accents the corner. It also hides the top of the silhouettes that were installed in the windows for light and privacy control. This design reminds me of a lady's shawl casually, yet elegantly, draped over one shoulder. Just right for the floral fabric and the sage green walls.

Rather than try to configure a bed skirt that would cover the box springs and add a coverlet on top, we opted for a full length bedspread that hangs just to the floor. The upper edge of the spread was contrast lined so it can be turned back to show a lovely green contrast that coordinates perfectly with the walls. Completing the ensemble are a few shams and a center lumbar pillow that include several coordinating fabrics.

The dilemmas of the corner windows and the new mattress were both gracefully addressed with design solutions that are elegant and timeless. No one would guess that we started with an issue or two--rather than just a singular goal of making a bedroom restful and elegant!

Let it Flow: Planning for Color in Your Window Treatments in Adjacent Rooms.

Finished Breakfast Area

Often times the first questions in a consultation are focused on where do we start? Fabrics first, or colors? Do we start in this room or the one adjacent? This project highlights how important these question are, and the impact of careful planning on making the results work both in a visual and architectural sense.

There were two factors motivating the homeowners to seek my services in this beautiful home. In the breakfast area there was a significant afternoon sun issue, so the point that sitting at certain places at the table was impossible. There was a beautiful view of the backyard and the pool through these windows and five active children to keep an eye on, so the ability to open and close the window treatment was key. Whatever fabric was selected needed to complement the beautiful dusty sage green stained woodwork and bead board as well as the tapestry fabric on the chairs.

Immediately to the right of the Breakfast Area was this elegant Living Room with all the furnishings you see in the photos below Draperies were needed to finish the look. The French Doors open to a lovely terrace next to the pool , and were made from rich stained mahogany so the design had to permit open and closure of the doors. The fabrics had to coordinate with the furnishings as well as the breakfast area textiles.

Both rooms had colors in common but completely different looks and requirements for window treatment beauty and functionality. We selected the fabrics for both rooms, designed the treatments, and approved both projects at the same time. This process gave the client:

1. Assurance that the color schemes were going to flow from room to room,

2. The ability to make decisions within budget since we could make adjustments to either room before we committed to a certain fabric or look,

3. A feeling of excitement about both rooms and anticipation of the installation. Less stress, more fun!

Even if you are not able to execute your plan all at once, making the decisions that impact large areas of your house, the color flow, or even the details of one room in advance is so smart. It will save you time, money, and stress. Do it once. Do it right!

Inspire 2011: My Debut as a Speaker!

The week following Labor Day I traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to the first annual conference held by the Window Coverings Association of America (WCAA). This was a gathering of many specialists in our field, from those who labor with love on the fabrication and creation of beautiful window treatments, to those who support us with innovative products and education. There was an abundance of creativity and inspiration in the Galt Hotel for four days. I was honored to be there.

I taught two classes for decorators and business owners who are seeking to improve the services that they offer to their clients. The first was on using color in their sales repertoire, and the second was on setting goals and planning for their business success. Over the years I have learned so much (read: vertical learning curve) from other professionals in this industry. At a point that I want to give back; leading seminars seems to be an appropriate way to start. Everyone who attended my classes stayed for the full session and asked great questions, so I consider the conference a success on my part!

The highlight of the Conference for me was the keynote speech given by Sarah Richardson of Sarah's House on HGTV. She is an enormously talented designer and her love for fabrics and beautiful window treatments reminded me of why many of us simply love what we do. She also re-ignited interest on my part to create some very special rooms around beautiful fabrics and windows, so I'm putting it out there that I am ready if you are!

I'll be sharing some of her points and ideas in an upcoming blog post. Her great taste and ideas were timeless and relevant to just about anyone's decor. If course, she shared her portfolio and some of the back stories to certain episodes of her shows, which was insightful and entertaining.

I thank the WCAA for a great experience and look forward to next year, which I hear is already in the works.

Top Ten Color Tips :Part Two

This is the second installment of the paint tips post that I promised. Seems that with the trend of staying put, painting is becoming the home improvement project of choice for many. After all, how many decorating projects that cost often less than $100 for materials can deliver the same amount of impact?

Here are the second 5 great tips that Porter/Pittsburgh Paints recommends and I whole heartedly second.

6. Look Up! Paint your ceilings not white! If the wall color is light enough, use the same color on the ceiling. for dark walls choose a color that is 1-2 shades lighter than the walls. Or, choose a coordinating color that ties in with your fabrics. Your ceiling is your fifth wall and a fabulous opportunity for more color and self expression. Don't miss out on the finishing touch for your room!

7. Twice: Repeat the paint colors in the pillows, window treatments or fabrics. Use Voice of Color Harmony color chips to pull coordinating colors together for a unified look. Another take is to use the wall, ceiling and trim color to repeat and accentuate the colors of the fabrics and textiles in your room. Often when we've picked the perfect drapery fabric, choosing the wall color is fun because we can select a color that brings out just the right colors to pull the room together.

8. Last: Choose your paint color last. Paint can be matched to any color. Look at your furniture, flooring, window treatments, and pull your paint color from those decor pieces. I cannot be say this enough! It is so much easier to pick paints once fabrics are chosen. This will also save you money on your decorating project, as you can pick rugs and fabrics in your price range first, then paint to match. Plan first, then paint!

9. Accent: Which wall should be your accent wall? It should be the focal point of your room. Choose a wall with a fireplace or that your bed is up against, or one with a gorgeous piece of artwork.

10. Wider: Painting one wall of a hallway a darker color than the other wall will make a hallway appear wider. Choose an entirely different color for the wall at the end of the hallway. This new color will lead you down the hallway and create interest.

A Creative Solution for an Arched Window Worth Repeating

This west facing foyer window was in need of a covering that would block the western sun but provide a beautiful complement to the columns and faux finished ceiling

This lush velvet drapery was completely trimmed with bullion fringe and mounted above the window frame on hand finished medallions

From this vantage point you can see all the sources of color inspiration for this window treatment: the painted trey ceiling, the crackled painted columns, and the hand hooked rug at the base of the stairs

Worth mentioning is that this creation won Second Place in 2001 in the Window Fashion Magazine Design Competition. I traveled to New Orleans to receive the award. My client was thrilled to tell her friends that she had an award winner in her foyer!

Recently I've broken out my boxes of slides and have started converting images to digital. I'll be posting some of my classics as I get the pictures ready.

The best part of this project was that the client loved the design and its impact on her foyer. It blocked her sunlight just the right way, so her room was more tolerable in the afternoon in a most fashionable way. The treatment is pulled to the correct side to block the sun, and the old world style reminds her of her travels in Europe. The inspiration for this drapery was from historic sketches in a french design book, and classic lines that were great in the 1800's continue to stand the test of time.

Needless to say, I'll go to great lengths to design a solution for a challenging window to suit my client's dreams and taste. That was true 10 years ago and remains true today.

Motorized Shades: Control your Shades with a Touch of a Button!

While this remote is demonstrated by a guy, I can tell you from personal experience that having a remote to control your shades is simply fabulous. Ladies, this remote is for you!

I had a motorized shade in my bath and never had to step into the bath tub to open and close my Silhouette each morning as I got ready for the day. Kept the remote on the counter and simply touched the button and Voila!

They are super easy to operate and you do not need an electrician to install the battery operated version.

How do I treat different type windows in the same room?

A question that clients often ask is "How do I treat windows that are different shapes or sizes that are in the same room?" For a while, the solution was fairly limited shutters or blinds, as they can be made to fit different shapes while using the same finish. Today, there are many more creative, beautiful solutions.
For example, the room above has a sliding glass door in the center of the wall that is flanked by two large open windows. As you can see through the sheer fabric, there is also a stunning view to be appreciated too.
While we don't have majestic rocky mountains in Georgia, we do have beautiful lake, golf course, pool, and landscape views that we want to see through our walls of windows.

The example above shows how to use a Luminette (the vertical sheer treatment) and the Silhouette (the horizontal sheer treatment) in the same room with visual appeal and a practical solution to a UV or glare challenge. The fabrics are the same on both styles giving a great whole room solution.

This lovely living room had a similar dilemma, and again the Luminette was used on the patio doors and a Vignette, a treatment similar to a Roman Shade, was selected for the window seat. The fabrics coordinate for a consistent color and texture match.

A more modern take is to use a sliding panel system for the patio door and a screen shade for the window. Screen shades are great for blocking glare and filtering light in areas that privacy is not needed. Many of my clients love the simplicity and clean line appearance of these two treatments. Again, they are both made from the same fabric for a well designed look.

Many homes offer upper story windows that we fall in love with until we realize that the sun streams in through them and creates glare, fading, and general discomfort at particular times of day. How to handle these windows I am often asked, yet no one wants to totally cover them up. This example illustrates using a Silhouette in the upper windows. Notice that you can still see the trees through the sheers and there is still plenty of light in the room. The most common comment I hear after Silhouettes are installed is that the light is so much gentler--it is filtered and softened. Can you imagine sitting with a friend in these chairs and having a conversation? Plenty of natural light to see, but no squinting required.

I like the way that the three windows on the left of the room below are treated with one Luminette over the entire wall. The silhouette of the window frames is visible through the sheer as is the railing of the deck outside. When the vanes are closed there will be a continuous flow of fabric to cover all the windows and the wall space and maximizing the appearance into the illusion of a larger window. A good choice rather that breaking this space into three smaller narrow shades. The fabrics on the two windows are from the same collection for the consistent look I've been highlighting in this post.

Sometimes a close up gives even better impression. Here is a corner shot of the Luminette on the right and the Silhouette on the left. Notice that the vane spacing is similar and the sheer fabric between the vanes is the same. The view of the umbrella outside is virtually the same through each treatment.

So you see that there are some wonderful attractive solutions for solving sun, UV, and glare challenges for different shape and style windows within the same are of your home. No longer are you limited to just wood products! And if your significant other is vetoing window treatments because he wants his lake view unencumbered, but you are worried about fading your favorite rug and leather sofa, there are solutions for all your windows that will fit all types of shapes and sizes. No, you do not have to use the same treatment for every window!

Top Ten Color Tips (Part One)

Springtime brings spring cleaning and often a desire to have a fresh look in a room or two. I recently came across this list of ten valuable color tips from The Voice of Color, the online color source from Porter and Pittsburgh Paints. I liked the list so much I thought it was worth re-posting, along with a comment or two. Here are one through five:

1. Warmth: White should only be intentional. If you go clean white make sure your decor wants a pure white. If you decor is warm, choose a creamy white to add warmth to the setting, Add softness with a tint of your favorite color. Pull a Voice of Color Whites card for beautiful options. In other words, don't use white walls as a default color because you do not know what else to do. There are many variations of white that will make quite a difference in your room's appearance, so be as intentional with white as any wall color.

2. Trim: To minimize unattractive trim, paint the trim the same color as the wall. To accentuate trim and moulding, paint it a lighter or darker color than the wall.

3. Hold: Don't hold your color chips against a white wall. Hold your chips next to your furniture, window treatments, and cabinets to see how the color wall react next to your paint colors. Test in the light throughout the day. Every room needs an inspiration piece--a fabric, a rug, or even artwork that provides the jumping off point for the color palate. Gauge your color for the walls from the furnishings, not the reverse!

4. Big: Powder Rooms are the perfect place for big color. Experiment with a big red, black, dark grey, of sharp pink for your powder room to make statement and have fun. I could not agree more!

5. Shelf: Paint the back of shelves and bookcases with color the create interest and design. Consider painting the backs of your bookcases and built ins the same color as your walls or a shade darker. Just this small touch of color will bring positive energy to this feature of your room.

If you find this color information helpful, I am so glad, However, if this makes your head swim, remember that investing in a color consultation may be the best money your spend on your decorating project. A Bay Window Master Bedroom Makeover

When my client called to get started with an update for her master bedroom bay window treatments, she emphasized that she wanted a light, open, and airy look. She did not want to change her wall color or the shutters that were in the window. So we created this special combination of textured sheer and elegant linen blend for these full length draperies.

The Bay window before we started. The swags and cascades came with the house and certainly were current 12 years ago. But it was time for a change, do you not agree?

After the installation. the simplicity of the treatment and the elegance of the linen fabric add a timeless elegance to this bay window. She can redecorate many times over and these draperies will go with any number of color schemes and decorating themes. The rouching at the top added just the right light touch of testure. Best of all, this scarf of color could be changed later if she wants! Imagine chocolate brown, mineral blue, sage green-who knows what other combinations. How versatile!

While my client wanted to update the bedroom, she had to choose carefully. Her king size bed and the big TV make her bedroom a favorite gathering spot for her grandchildren. So the bedding had to be practical. We paired a ready made, washable duvet with custom shams and custom dust ruffle. This was the perfect combination for the detail and personalization she sought with the practicality she needed for her family.

My new embroidery machine has given me the opportunity to personalize items for my clients. Do you like the layer of embroidery behind the lettering? Monogramming is such a fun way to add detail. Have you seen the most recent Pottery Barn catalog? Monogramming is no longer just a southern trend. Seems that the rest of the decorating world has discovered what we've known for a while. There's nothing like the charm of embroidered linens.

Custom Bedding: French Laundry at AmericasMart

In case you haven't noticed, natural linen textiles are hot this year! One of my favorite showrooms at this year's Gift Show at America's Mart was French Laundry. Loaded with vintage style bedding, pillows, and upholstery, the showroom was just beautiful and full of luxurious ensembles. As a designer in Atlanta, I attend this show in January and July to see what trends are coming into the home fashion market for the season.

Each pillow was worth taking a closer look. There were varieties of linen, muslins, damasks, and ticking. I've made many pillows over the years, and I appreciate the detail and workmanship that these collections offer. These are ready made, deliverable off the shelf, so delivery times are faster than custom, which sometimes is a good choice. French Laundry is so beautiful anyway, it would be worth the wait no matter what.

This waterfall bedspread was a favorite of mine. Luxurious, feminine, opulent, current, fresh...along with other comments I heard as I admired the collection.

These wonderful spool back chairs remind me of vintage spool beds that my grandmother had. I bought them for a special client and delivered them today. They are covered with a rough textured linen in oyster with a off white woven stripe. We bought the ottoman in the grouping too, which is in the same oyster linen with a screen printed chocolate brown damask.

Fabulous sofa, coarse oyster linen, rubbed bronze nail head trim = a wonderful reading retreat, a cozy conversation spot. Perhaps this one will be on my client list next year. Interested?

Chocolate Brown Bedroom in a Paris Apartment...Divine

A Paris apartment bedroom from Interior Design Magazine. This room caught my attention immediately. Sharp and sophisticated, yet restful and elegant. Of course, since I love, love, love, brown, and love Paris even more, coming to this conclusion was instant.

If you are attracted to brown, whether in your rooms or in your wardrobe, this is what the color can say about you:

Associated with taste and sophistication. Think about dark chocolate desserts and the decadence of chocolate truffles.

· Brown is a sensual, earthy color. What other color conveys grounding and balance like deep rich brown?

· Seen as confident, yet restful and quiet. Think the serenity of a mountain hike, or the beauty of pebbles in a stream bed.

· The comfort of brown is almost universal, as many people find the color to be a comfortable neutral to use in their decor. Ralph Lauren has used this color in many palates to add depth and elegance to his collections.

Treatments for Transom Windows

Sometimes just a little fabric and color goes a long way to transform a space. In this project, my client wanted to fill in the upper windows, the transoms, with fabric and color in this family breakfast area. She was quite happy with the blinds on the lower windows.

Additionally, this is a replica of a historic home, so the trims and moldings around the windows are just beautiful. No fabric to cover this detail was permitted!

My challenge was to come up with a simple treatment that would fit inside each window opening that would also scale into a larger treatment or smaller, according to the actual window. The doorway below is an example of the need for sizing the valance.

The valance was mounted to small blocks of wood that we mounted inside the window frame to keep the open feeling and draw attention to the special architectural details.

Each valance is trimmed with a scalloped fabric applique and colorful, lush tassel fringe at the hemline.

My client was very pleased with the results and loved the cheerful effect of the additional saffron yellow and grassy green fabric in her rooms.

The Process: Pick one!

Deciding that it is time to add window treatments to your room is the first step and perhaps the easiest for a homeowner. After that it becomes, but what style? How should they be hung on the window? And of course, the biggest question, will I like they way they look? Or will my significant other like them too?

Now I could stand at the window and make big gestures, point to a magazine picture and say it will look like this except for blah blah blah, and conclude with "just trust me Honey". That makes all of us anxious for sure and not so excited about the anticipation of the installation.

Custom draperies are an investment and for many is one of the largest purchases that they will make without really seeing the final product until it shows up at the front door. An important part of the my job as Designer in consultation with any client is to enable them visualize what the possibilities are. I have several tools to do this, but my favorite is to generate a simple rendering like these. Usually upon seeing how the pieces will fit together for their specific windows in a straightforward manner, the design process my clients know what they want and are pretty excited about moving forward.

The first drawing and the one below are for a dining room project that I am collaborating with another designer and the client. The discussion was two panels per window or just one? What do you think?

Note that the wall space to the outside of each window is very small, so the poles are going to butt up to the wall. The space in the middle is ample for a piece of furniture even if we use four panels. There are shutters on the windows for privacy, so these draperies are for decoration and are stationary.

Then we moved to the great room. When entering the home as you look through the foyer this wall of beautiful mahogany doors is right in front of you. (below) They're quite the focal point, and there is a large outdoor porch area just outside. Right now the doors are rather stark and the room needs the softening that draperies can add.

Between the three of us, there was discussion regarding the number of panels in this room also. Two or four? All three sets of doors are functional, but the homeowner thinks that the middle set will be the primary entrance and exit.

Which version do you vote for?

Making sure that we have explored all the possibilities and made sure that the vision for the windows are shared by everyone in the process is a vital part of any consultation. Once we have the logistics worked out then the fun begins. Selecting fabric! A post on that process to come next. Stay tuned.

Pillows! Personalized Accessories.

When I get a design request for a custom bedding ensemble, one of the best parts of the process is creating a group of pillows and shams with the client in mind. There are so many ways to include fabulous dressmaker details and trims, and believe me, I have a stash of buttons, laces, and other divine additions for smashing pillows. The bedroom above is from the Roswell Woman's Showcase Home when I was the designer for the Teen Girl's Room and let my feminine side loose for some wonderful creations. (While this post highlights pillows, don't you love the look of the upholstered headboard too?)

While roaming the halls of Maison et Object in January there were oodles of pillows and upholstered headboards with wonderful detail. Each one was a bit different and deserved attention and admiration.

Wired rosettes, belt buckles, and cut and layered silks as well as the tried and true monogram..
to bead trims, oversize buttons, and tone on tone color blocking make each of these cushions a piece of art to enjoy in a chair, on a bed, or in some special place in need of personality.
So, earlier this year when I was commissioned to create special pillows for another young lady's room we chose a wonderful collection of fabrics for her bedding. This silk cut work sheer was perfect for this deep ruffle and was whimsical enough for a 13 year old, but sophisticated enough for this elegant fabric.
Many times when collaborating with a client on a bedroom we discuss the number of pillows that she wants and the general shapes of each. I refer to these as her "pillowscape". However, the details of each pillow are not fully created until all the fabrics are laid out on the sewing table. From there, the fabrics and the personality of the client and the room guide the process. The goal is to delight the client, and in this case, that was the outcome.
Customized, dressmaker details, colorful, and personalized, pillows are the accessory that makes a room reflect the occupant's personality, much like a scarf and jewelry complete and personalize that special outfit. The look is not complete without the accessories!

Finding Inspiration in Oakland Cemetery

I enrolled in a photography class and have enjoyed it immensely. Hopefully you will see the fruits of this endeavor in improved photos on this blog and in my portfolio. This week was our field trip to the historic Oakland Cemetery. After living here for over two decades I finally visited this gem. To my delight I found energy and inspiration in the adornment of the Victorian era statuary in this historic site. Everything old is new again.

Before the silk flower, tombstones were embellished with permanent florals and fabric drapings that have endured the test of time with grace and beauty. The marker above was one of my first discoveries. The fabric folds and fringe are incredibly realistic, don't you think? Notice the urn of flowers turned on its side on the crest of the stone.

When Oakland was established prior to the Civil War, downtown was a journey away. Not so any more. Thankfully the area is protected and while it is surrounded by dense development, it remains an oasis of green space and serenity. It is much like a park with benches and sitting areas under old magnolia trees.

Our assignment was to explore the grounds and experiment with our cameras using some of the techniques we have learned thus far. I found that as I looked at the monuments and tombstones, I saw many parallels to drapery projects that I've created.

For example, notice the draping on this Obelisk?

and the resemblance to the cascading fabric on these old world jabots and swags?

Can't you just see the velvet and fringe that inspired this jabot and tassel carving?

And its resemblance to an Empire valance in an elegant Master Bedroom created with embroidered silk and lots of tassel fringe?

This Obelisk caught my attention from a distance with the elegant swagged carving.

The casual draping of fabric like this looks unconstructed and yet elegant, much like the bustle swags and cascades made from silk for a client's very tall french doors.

Love the intricately carved laurel on this marker, and the bottom of this stone looks like a valance I've made for a client's guest bath.

Now I did do a bit of sight seeing while I was there..

No trip to Oakland would be complete without paying respects to Margaret Mitchell, who is buried in the Marsh family plot with her second husband. Then I remembered that Scarlet wore her draperies, so there I go again, drawing a parallel.....

I looked for Golf Legend Bobby Jones resting place and found homage paid to him in the form of golf balls. Made me smile; what an appropriate tribute. Yes, this area had the best grass close cut like a golf green. No draperies here..but the golf balls are a unique touch for sure.

This was a great discovery, located just outside the gates and a supporter of the Oakland Historical Society. I'll have to investigate sometime soon, so my next visit will not be on Sunday morning. One of my classmates said they have good fish tacos, and that rooftop bar looks like fun......

I took over 100 pictures that morning and enjoyed the history and beauty of Oakland while getting some good material for my class critique. The inspiration I found for my design work was a surprise, and testament that it pays to be looking for ideas everywhere. Who'd have thought that I'd find it in a Cemetery?

P. S. There was also some amazing old ironwork that I photographed and plan to use for ideas for hardware. Will post those pictures soon.

Maison et Object: Colorful Upholstery

It is almost officially summer, and to celebrate I'm posting some of the fabulous fabrics upholstered on chairs at Maison et Object and the showrooms at Deco Off event in Paris in January. Color was not in short supply, nor was pattern and geometry.
The Osborne and Little booth was surrounded with clever and inspiring vignettes. Take a look at the lines of these chairs. They're retro and fresh (a common theme this year) with the bold patterns and colors placed on the seats and backs. Makes you want to visit the nearest consignment store and rescue a vintage piece and give it new life, doesn't it?
Window shopping is a lost art for many of us in suburbia, but not in Paris. The window vignettes of the fabric showrooms in the city were as exciting as the fabrics inside. The chair above and below were in the Pierre Frey window and creatively displayed a number of fabrics. The goodies on the table were made from fabric too.

Textured velvet in the theme of gray and mauve at Osborne and Little. Yep, mauve. Reports are that it is on its way back to our color palates in new and modern shades. While initial reactions to the mere word mauve were not favorable, most of us on the trip agreed that this current color combination is likable. What do you think?
Chic, modern, and influenced by menswear was the theme for this cool chair. Many of the Editeurs had new collections of menswear fabrics for upholstery and drapery that featured wools and synthetics with shades of gray, browns and blacks in traditional patterns like hounds tooth and herringbone. Modern, clean lines harmonized well with this style.

Wallpaper is back too. Of course, at Osborne and Little they have spectacular wall coverings and their vignettes displayed the best. Geometric patterns reminiscent of the 60's abounded in neutral shades and very bold colors like pink and green for the adventuresome. We saw more large repeat, colorful papers at Dedar at a private showing.

Ballroom Gown Draperies for the Spring Prom

Every once in a while a project is completed that is just an oooh, ahhh moment. Or as a very southern friend of mine says," so yummy you could eat it with a spoon". This was one of those projects. This living room was fresh, light, and elegant as the client had planned and the drapery was one of the finishing touches. As an Atlanta window treatment designer I was privileged to work with another artisan who add detail and art to the room that harmonized with the drapery. This was the perfect partnership and the client came out a winner.

Many times clients ask how to treat a group of windows. The architecture of the arched window and the expanse of view is a priority to preserve and enhance, therefore the simple rod and the added focal point of the shell iron bracket in the center of the treatment. The overall plan encompassed the windows as one and therefore enhanced the scale of the wall and room.

An important challenge to the design was that the afternoon sun streamed through the windows and would eventually fade the rug, floors, and other art in the room. Therefore I was charged with creating beauty that served an important practical purpose.
The cloisonne painting was planned by Wall Expressions to complement the furnishings in the room and was inspired by the hand painted chest in the photo. The artist applied the designs and paint to each frame on the wall and brushed the trim with a beautiful gold paint. The colors in the painted chest and walls were repeated in the rug and upholstery, and we continued the palate in the fabrics of the window treatments.
I am always looking for a dressmaker detail, an twist for the creation that makes it truly a one of a kind. In this case, the top of the drapery had large button holes that allowed a sash of contrast fabric to be threaded through for added detail and dimension. Long term this could be changed to highlight a different color scheme. How practical, yet customizable!

When we created this room, the upholstery and the rug were in place and served as the jumping off point for the design and fabric selection. We added a layer of sun control and privacy with the winter white roman shades in the windows and doors to solve the fading issue. Since they match the trim so well, you hardly notice them, which is what we wanted. The drapery and wall paintings are the show stoppers!
Just like an elegant billowing gown, the hemline of these panels is full and opulent. We use a special treatment for the hemline that makes recreating this look simple. It is as easy as lifting the drapery to dust and dropping it back in place! As with all our custom couture drapery, these panels are lined with premium linings and interlinings to give volume and dimension, not to mention stability and longevity with the extra layers.

So if you are looking for the finishing touch for that room that just does not seem finished, consider drapery. The partnership of fabric, paint, and a professional creative eye for line and color will take your room the the next level.

A Majestic Master Suite

These days our homes are our sanctuaries, our retreats, and the Master Suite is often the heart of this oasis. For this special couple, creating a majestic environment in their bedroom was a personal desire that they spared no detail in accomplishing.

The coverlet, the shams and the bedskirt are all part of the custom ensemble that we created. As you might expect, the mattress on the bed is extra deep, so the coverlet was specified to be made long enough to drape into the side rail. Each sham was pieced using a combination of the silks from the windows along with trims and new fabrics. Even the bedskirt is a custom creation using the fabric from the drapery panels. My installer slid under the bed on his back under the bed to mount the skirt to the bed frame--this was a custom and personal process for the client.

Even the sitting area was furnished with care and relaxed luxury in mind. These velvet chaise lounges are perfect for sitting and reading a great book, and in my clients case, snuggling and reading with her children in her lap. The asymmetrical swags draw attention to this magnificent mantle.We created a focal point perfect for art, wouldn't you agree? When planning this room the window treatment design not only had to highlight the fabric beautifully but be adaptable to single windows and the larger triple window.

This embroidered silk from Vervain was the inspiration piece that we used to create the fabric palate for all the bedding, window treatments and upholstery. The background is in a parchment silk with embroidery in teal, bronze, gold, olive, and ecru. It lends an aged and appropriately vintage feel. The tassel fringe in alternating gold and cream is made from silk and is incredibly beautiful and soft. Silk fibers take dyes and color like no other textile and for such an exquisite fabric, silk trim was the only choice.

While the valance is deep and ample in length in proportion to the room and ceiling height. The cornice under the valance was designed to allow the shutter doors to open; an important detail for the long term enjoyment of these treatments. Cleaning windows now and then is unfortunately a reality and we made sure that we allowed for a bit of practicality.

Custom bedding and window treatments made this master suite a retreat fit for a relaxing escape for a busy couple. We used a fabric that they loved, so each time they enter the room this color palate and luxe bedding provide an escape from the world and the perfect place to relax and recharge. The designs reflect their tastes and dreams, which is always my goal when collaborating with my clients.

Art for your Windows from the International Window Coverings Expo

Decorating your space, or your windows, can be a personal statement. Just as selecting the art for your walls is a reflection of your taste and personality, how you choose to decorate your windows can be a similar expression and process.

I recently attended the International Window Coverings Expo where vendors and expert professionals gather annually to see what is new, innovative, and hot in the industry. This year I discovered several gems and will share them with you. My observation this year was about art.

Always a favorite, there are vignettes of beautiful custom window treatments crafted by some of the best in their field. This year was no exception. This layered balloon shade had detail galore from the hardware at the top to the tassel trim and hand made buttons and petals at the pleats.

This fabulous fabric is an original art design created by Jackie Von Tobel. Jackie has hand drawn these fabric designs and hand colored each one. The fabric is digitally printed from her art on linen. She can produce a small amount or yards by the hundreds since each order is custom printed for each client The array of colors and fresh designs she has created is truly inspirational. This is a discovery that I cannot wait to share with a special client!

Artful windows now reaches beyond creative fabric treatments. With the innovations of digital printing beyond anything ever imagined, color and art are now available on what we've previously relegated as a surface just for paint. Masterpiece Shutters won an award at the show for their new product that allows placement of a painting over your window.
So your view is great whether the window is open or closed. Or better yet, if your surroundings are not so great. Imagine that shutter that you never open, now it could be more than just a solid color match to your window trim....

I'm not sure I'd ever open this one--The painting is so lovely.

There were several other very innovative window shade companies that have integrated digital printing into window coverings at the Expo. One company in particular I will share with you in a separate post--their shades were exciting and just plain Wow!

Art for your windows has taken on a new slant for sure.

To Market in Paris

Shopping in Paris was a visual and pedestrian experience. This flower market located just a block from our hotel was open early in the morning with this bountiful selection of flowers. After the American experience of floral shops and malls, I found myself feeling almost childlike in my awe of the beauty of the flowers in this market. This picture was taken at about 9 in the morning in January. The open air market was alive and well even in the winter.
I am discovering that I have a romantic side...I loved just about everything about the city of lights. Even going to the market.

One day while my gal friends and I were walking back to our hotel on a rather circuitous route, we came across this delightful store that was another treat in every way. Not only did they give us samples of just about anything, but the color and imagination that had been invested to make the shopping experience memorable was so apparent. I thought about Willie Wonka as I tasted chocolates and toffees and other confections.
We all bought--who could resist? And everything tasted as good as it looked!
Now in my internet surfing today, I came across a site that sells beautiful French Market baskets. Can you imagine going to market daily, as the french do, and putting your days purchases in this rolling cart? They've been eco-minded long before we were--no plastic bags to tote or recycle with this fun cart.
Maybe I will have to invest in one so when I go to the Farmer's Market this summer I can get my Paris fix locally. Well, that may be a stretch--I am in Georgia after all.
The French Basketeer also carries these organic produce bags to complete the shopping trip.
This shopping bag caught my attention for it's colorful materials and practicality.

A glimpse of the column of color that was the solution for this room in need of completion...

Here is where we started for this window treatment project. A room where my clients spent a great deal of time working to complete, but just could not get to a place that felt right. They realized that draperies would be the finishing touch and called me to assist.

Sometimes the simplest treatment is just what is needed to finish a room. But like most things in life , that which appears simple is often a result of careful thought and planning. These columns of color for a clients sun room are just that. Let me explain....
This spacious sun room has a large open plan that flows off the formal living room and breakfast area. The lovely high ceiling provides wonderful light and scale, but before the drapery there just seemed to be something out of balance with the overall look. They had carefully selected their furnishings, rugs, and art. Just one more decorative piece was needed.

There were several interesting challenges to this room. First, there was a single window at the far left, there were three sets of french doors behind the sofa, and there were two single windows placed high in the walls at the far right end of the room. These last two also opened into the breakfast area.

Secondly, since all the colors, fabrics, and accessories were in place, my job was to source drapery fabric that would complement all of the existing elements. No other changes were going to be made. I always advise my clients to select fabrics first and then paint, because paint can be tinted and adjusted, but fabric colors are fixed. However, there are exceptions to every situation, and here is one with a happy ending.The draperies are made from a tone on tone damask that blends perfectly with the wall color. The scale of the pattern was large; about 24" which fit the scale of the room too. The scarf treatment on the top was made from a luxurious silk stripe that contained the rust reds, sage greens, and rich gold tones that pulled the colors together in this room as well as provided flow from the adjacent areas. The large tiebacks were just the finishing touch.

The hardware was a substantial 3" wood pole with intricately detailed brackets and finials. All in a hand rubbed venetian gold tone to be dressy but not overly so.

The single windows the faced into the breakfast area needed a different treatment in design because we had to take into consideration that the backside was visible in the next room. These cornices made from the drapery fabric disguise the tops of the window frame. The lovely relaxed roman shades are made from the luxe silk stripe. All were backed with putty colored lining and scaled to mirror the window treatments on the breakfast area side of the windows.

So these draperies completed the room. The challenge was met. A window treatment combination to suit three different window types, made with fabrics that complemented all the existing decorative elements. My clients were thrilled. That was the very best part.

The Perfect Pitch: Draperies for a Vaulted Ceiling

I am always up for a new challenge when it comes to designing window treatments for unique window groupings. There are so many creative ways to work with the geometry of a room. This project was no exception. Designated as a relaxed area for conversation at the top of a staircase in the Roswell Women's Showcase Home, this window was the first thing that someone saw upon reaching the second floor. This presented a wonderful opportunity to emphasize the natural focal point that was in place with the lines of the ceiling and the window configuration.
Here is what I saw the first day I visited the house.

I could have placed the drapery in a traditional way with the top a horizontal line parallel to the tops of the side windows, but the lines of the ceiling were just too compelling to do that, do you not agree? This room also needed some softening, as all the lines are sharp and angular.

The cuff was created with the idea of complementing the furnishings that were presently in place. For practicality, as well as creativity, this cuff was fabricated separately and attaches to the wrought iron medallions with ties. This way the cuff can be removed if the homeowner changes her mind, which we all know can happen as home fashions trends are always changing.

The striped fabric is trimmed with a band of complementary red fabric and a row of grosgrain ribbon. I could not find a trim that suited me, so the bottom is trimmed with wood beads that I sewed on by hand to create a trim. Don't you love the way the shape echoes the shape of the medallions?
The tieback repeats the trims of the cuff, and the leading edge and hem are outlined with a row of brick red cording inserted for accent. The corner is mitered, and the ample hemline spills onto the floor.
I knew that my A in geometry would come in handy some day. Lines, angles, and curves. Still a challenge to work with, but this is more fun than my homework was.

Fashion Inspiration for a Pillowscape

Many times when we start the process of creating a special room, my client and I collaborate on what the inspiration or the jumping off point will be. This bedroom was created for a young lady transitioning from her room created for her elementary school days into a more grown up phase of life. She and her mom had seen a new twist on the popular color scheme of mineral blue and brown which uses a splash of paprika as an accent.

They selected a lush chenille for the coverlet that incorporated these colors and enlisted my help to pull it all together with creative shams and draperies. After careful sourcing, I found just the right combination of fabrics, using embroidered silk and a fabulous silk sheer along with a combination of trims.

In order to create the layers that would complete the look, I started with two king size shams in the back, added a single body pillow, and finished with a generous lumbar pillow. The silk sheer provided just the touch of paprika. The body of the pillow is backed with solid color taupe silk.
This special lumbar pillow features the sheer used in the bathroom windows (I will post about this separately) backed with solid silk to showcase the beautiful trellis pattern. The edges of this middle section and the flange are outlined with french ribbon adorned tiny bows.

The cascading oversize ruffle on either end of the body pillow was simply elegant. My client said it reminded her of a beautiful dress. The center pleat was trimmed with a covered button and a tassel that I hand made from bits of trim and short strips of sheer fabric.
The upper corners of these shams were trimmed with buttons and fabric flowers that I created especially for this young lady. She and I both love j. crew and the ribbon flowers and embellishments that are so popular with this clothing line. Don't these flowers look fresh and fun? All of these shams and pillows were carefully hand crafted with a great deal of thought.
Well worth the effort, wouldn't you say?

In the Clouds at Maison et Object

While wandering the vast halls of Maison, I came across this narrow hallway tucked in between two other booths. The soft light, lush drapery panels, and the dreamy effect of the light playing off the fabrics drew me in right away.

This new fabric line was created by an Australian designer for Pagoda International based in Belgium. Her background is in costume design and she is branching out in to fabric and furniture with this line. The draperies were made from linen fabric woven on special looms that produced fabric over 100" wide and with amazing texture. The linen was soft and in a pleasing shade of winter white. Honestly, it felt like you were stepping into a cloud. Even the carpet was lush under my feet with extra padding.

These panels had wide pockets spaced far enough apart to drape gracefully. The design is so simple, yet everyone who went into this booth had to take a few minutes to take in the overall effect. The lighting was perfect, and yet I wondered how different and wonderful the effect would be with natural sunlight.
Everything in this area was in soft white: the furniure was laquered or painted, the chandelier was draped in yards and yards of lace, and the drapery wrapped every inch of the walls in softness.

These draperies had dressmaker details: The hems were shaped by the inclusion of boning to give stability and dimension. Each of these curves were formed by a godart, a triangular insert placed into the panel. This was a popular feature of dresses and skirts in the 30's and 40's.

Don't you love this tieback? Feathers, light and airy, to balance out this ethereal space.

Like many of the collections on display at Maison, this line was fresh off the design table and in limited release. We have to wait to see it in the US for a while. I've been inspired by the effect of this fresh, soft, and natural fabric. You'll see how I apply this in future projects posts.

Tim Gunn "Makes It Work " in Atlanta

I had the pleasure of hearing Tim Gunn of the Parson’s School of Design and Project Runway at Georgia State University this week. My daughter is a student there and showed me the University Facebook page with the announcement that Tim Gunn was coming as part of a lecture series and asked would I like to go. Hello—yes!

I am a huge fan of Project Runway. So Monday afternoon I carefully selected just the right outfit (just in case I got to meet him--I wanted to put my best foot forward) and hopped the MARTA train downtown. Even Elizabeth shed her college uniform tee shirt and ragged jeans for a ruffled J.Crew blouse and pearls. He drew a capacity crowd of enthusiastic students and members of the community. I was eager to pick up some fashion tips and expected him to promote his new book due out in May. Instead, he spoke about his professional life journey, because as he said, you never know where it will take you. Appropriate for students and life learners like me.

The student bookstore sold 70 copies of this book in 20 minutes after Tim spoke.

Much to my surprise, Tim is an educator, not a designer. His tenure at Parson’s school of Design as Associate Dean of Fashion Design garnered both accolades and times of discord with the design community. While under Tim’s direction the school changed its focus from a perspective of reproducing fashion from established designers to an original lifestyle design format. He directed Parson’s instruction to shed old framework and allowed creativity to emerge. As he explained, prior to 1950, American fashion design was mostly about copying European fashion, so therefore sound drawing skills were needed, not original concepts.

He also pointed out that the fashion industry has been the last to embrace technology in the design process. That was not so surprising to me--many of us who have been in design for a while honed our visual skills with pencil and paper.

Tim took questions from the audience and here are summaries of some of his responses:

On trends in fashion: He is not a trend pusher. He was quick to point out that if you study fashion in three current magazines, you will find conflicts in what they promote as a “must have” for today. He recommends you know what you like, what looks good on you, and wear it!

On what you should choose for your wardrobe: You send a message to the world on how you wish to be perceived by what you wear. (He said this more than once.)Think about that!

Who is his favorite fashion icon? His role model he explained is Cary Grant. He always looked great, "even when dashing over a corn field to catch a plane."

Who has been the most innovative designer he has met through Project Runway? Christian Siriano of Season 4, no doubt. He said that when looking at Christian’s resume coming into the auditions, he questioned why they were considering him. After meeting Christian, it was unanimous that he was going to be on the show. He believes that Christian is a Prodigy and will be one of the next great fashion designers.

On why other shows that have unsuccessfully sought to imitate the success of Project Runway:

The other shows do not require the designers to sew. Designing is about making clothes. Does Michael Kors make his designs? No, but he could—he knows how to sew. The other shows have skipped this element of the process, and that is why they are not successful.

On the format of Project Runway; The show is filmed for 30 days straight in August when the Parson’s school is between sessions. The participants must have great stamina to compete, and it was at Tim’s insistence that they put time limits on the projects. The producers wanted the sewing to go on round the clock!

Where did the phrase “Make it Work” come from? Simply from any problem solving situation:

Assess existing conditions,

evaluate your options,

then make it work!

Tim signed many books, but I did not make it any closer than this!

As a designer, I appreciate the respect that he has earned for his vision for the creative process of design and his fortitude in going against the grain of what was established as the way that things have always been done.

When he concluded, my daughter and I rushed out to the line forming for book signing and pictures. We waited hopefully, but we were too far back to meet him, so no picture for me with Tim. However, I had a great afternoon listening to an interesting speaker and an even better time with my daughter.

Paris 2010--A Visual Feast!

At last I made it to the Maison et Object, the holy grail of home and textile markets, in Paris. Here I am outside hall 5, ready to begin the adventure. There were 7 halls in all, each with a theme, from tabletop, to bedding and home textiles, to my favorite, the Editeurs section, where the fabric houses had their displays. I walked the show for 2 solid days taking in as many new ideas and visual stimulation I could absorb.
I was blown away by the scale and detail of the displays. I hesitate to call these booths as we would in the US, as the spaces were as large as a store. Many were a boutique set up for the four days of this world market. This wall gives you a sense of what I am talking about. See how tall it is in relation to the people in the shot? The plates covering the wall were all different and meticulously spaced. Very eye catching.

Green was a theme used prominently, and I have other examples, but this booth took it seriously. The walls, both inside and out, were covered with boxwood branches. The base for the walls was wire, and each opening was filled with live branches. This was so inviting. The product offering was wall coverings and fabrics.

This exterior wall of a fabric and home textile vendor was built in part from soda cans, (at the bottom right) plastic milk jugs, water bottles, and other recyclables. I found it refreshing that the European market was concerned with reusing and repurposing as many of us in the US are.

And I thought the mixed media was just fun to look at too.
The scale and detail of the visual displays was endless. This booth had a 12 +foot high wall and a draped ceiling. So much easier to appreciate accessories when displayed as they might be used rather than in a booth.
Oh the lighting....I have decided that this category is my favorite just behind fabric. More postings of the fab lighting to come. Let me suffice it to say that elegant lighting is in, and crystals and glam are part of the package.

This is one corner or a 6000 square foot space that Chernome, of Belgium, had set up. The walls are salvaged from an old solarium and reconstructed for the show. This same vendor sets up a display at the Atlanta market that is just 500-600 square feet. No comparison!

The ingenuity just never stopped. These walls were nailed together and suspended from the ceiling. Can you tell that I spent almost as much time studying the displays as I did the merchandise?
I could not resist these chandeliers hung in just one corner of a booth. I have more lighting to share with you and will be writing a post on lighting to come.

Headed to Maison et Object for Trend Watching!

I am thrilled to tell you that I will be headed to Paris next week to attend the grandest, hippest, decor show known. Maison et Object is held annually and is the best place to trend watch for interior colors, design direction, and forecasting. This is an event that I have longed to attend for quite some time. This year it came to be.

I will be blogging from Paris as I journey through the markets, the show, and exploring the design districts of this chic city. Beginning on January 20, watch for some very different and interesting posts for this blog. I will be exploring with 11 other entrepreneurs, editors, and design professionals. Count on us to leave no stone unturned. You will not be disappointed!

I will be sharing the ideas and information I gain from this experience with you in this blog. I will also be hosting several gatherings to share more with my clients and friends who want to be in the know. We will know what is going to be hot and what is not!

Wallpaper is back! Yes that is what I said!

Wallpapers are back and they are better than ever. These photos are from a favorite collection of mine. I think the fresh colors and textures are fabulous and so inspiring in today's homes. Many of my clients seek a unique finish, one that reflects colors that make them happy, yet with an air of sophistication. Don't you think these are right on the mark?

Shake off your preconceived notions of wallpaper. It can be retro, contemporary, or classic.

Modern lines of the chair with this fab faux leather finish on the walls. Warm, earthy, and textural. What else do you need for your foyer?

Of course, I love the drapery as a soft touch to this room. Note the juxtaposition of the french gilded chair and the whitewashed chest. You know this room was designed with a special someone, likely a lady, who likes the hunt for a unique antique piece as well as the glam that only classic damask can offer.

Aren't these chairs and the lamp just the touch for this corner? Love the silhouette of the paper and the chair backs. Shag carpet too, baby!

This Damask is printed on grasscloth. Any of you watch Top Design on Bravo? This technique, printed grasscloth was used by one of the finalists on a single wall, behind a headboard, in a guest room.

Candice Olson would be envious of this room. Not her design, but her influence of classic furniture lines artfully combined with simple, cool contemporary lines in the paper. Just plain fun really, but for us grown ups.

So if you are looking for a current touch for that special room or corner of your home, give wallpaper a second consideration. This is not your 80's paper. Wallpaper is back and better than ever.

It pays to buy a brand name Shutter

Not all shutters are created equal. At the time that the purchase decision is in play, it would seem that price is the most important factor. There are certainly many out in the market who will do the project for less, particularly right now.
Over time though, the differences will become apparent. Is the finish staying true, or is it yellowing? Are the doors hanging even after a few years of heat and humidity?
Are the Louvers staying in place and working in tandem as they should? Did you have this great option shown above to select that offers no louver bar to clutter up your view?

Most importantly, do you have a company standing behind the product? Can you get service one year, three years, or even ten years later?

I was walking my dog this morning and a neighbor asked me if I knew of anyone who could help her with some repairs to her shutters. Her home is about 12 years old and over time the wear and tear from her family has caused louvers to break in several shutters. She has some that the tilt bar is broken off, and the staples are loose. They are in need of some repair and she cannot find the guy who sold them to her when she moved in.

The answer is no, I don't, as much as I'd like to. The dealer that she bought from years ago is long gone. She thought they'd be in the house only 2 years, so they bought price, not the warranty. Not all shutters are the same, and parts are not often interchangeable.

Two Story Draperies..before and after

I always welcome the challenge of working with a remodeling job. The rewards of seeing the potential in a room and bringing it to life with some vision and effort are just fantastic. This was the case for my client who purchased this house that had not been decorated or updated since the mid 80's.

The situation here, aside from the decor, was that this room gets full sun in the afternoon and is also the gathering place for this family's 5 boys to watch football on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. No matter how awesome the big screen TV, the experience is lacking if you have glare interference.

So we designed draperies that draw closed over these french doors and lined them with a heavy room darkening fabric. The valances at the top cover the rods and raise the eye above the natural line at the top of the door frame. She sheers draping over the triangular windows soften the light by reducing glare without darkening the room.

The color scheme reflects my client's personality--she is a lady of style and loves color. As the only gal in the house, she has to choose her places of self expression and color in her decor is one of them!

So we reached a great solution with everyone's desires met. The glare is gone when the draperies are drawn, and Mom gets her splash of color and feminine touches with the valances and sheers.

Drapery Design Solution for Multiple Windows

As you look at this client's sunroom, you can see that the challenge in this project was to come up this a solution for a room with three different window styles. The long windows behind the sofa are actually french doors that are not used, the single window on the left of the room, and the single windows set high on either side of the entry into the breakfast area.

The walls of this room had been faux painted in tone on tone stripes and all the rugs and upholstery were to stay.

As with many of us today, these folks have opted to stay in their home and wanted to use what they have, just give it a fresh look.

So, with the assistance of computer generated and some hand produced drawings, we designed several options for this project, and this was the result. We used a deep latte colored damask for the panels and cornices and crafted the over swag in an elegant classic striped silk. The final touch was achieved by strapping the two fabrics together with the tassel tieback. All new elements work with the existing items in the room.

Notice that the shades under the cornices drape into the glass area that is visible into the breakfast. No detail is overlooked--we lined these shades with putty colored silk so they are pleasing to look at from either side.

The result--an elegant sunroom ready for fall entertaining. We worked with the client's furnishings and within her budget to give her a fresh updated look.

French Doors, Arched Openings, and a Great Solution

My client called me to help with her living room. Now that she had furnished it with exquisite Beacon Hill upholstery, these magnificent doors were the in need of attention. The challenge: how to treat them with the dignity that they deserved and maintain their functionality. The fabrics in the room were drop dead fabulous, and were in hues of warm buttery gold and tuscan terracotta.
The solution: A hand finished 3" pole with ornate brackets across the wall to unify the group of doors, and classic, full draperies in gold damask. The empire swag and cascade complete the look and the color scheme. She was delighted and we agreed that this was the perfect solution for her and this room! Now she is ready for the holiday office party that her husband has planned.

Shopping for Antiques with Eddie Ross

Many of you know that I am a die hard antiques marketer. I will change the route of a trip in order to stop by a good antiques store. I love the fun of the hunt for treasures and unusual items which truly make a room personal. So much more interesting than new I think.
In June I had the pleasure of going to one of the south's best known markets, Scott's, with Eddie Ross of Bravo's Top Design. He offered a tour of Scott's where he guided us through looking for the potential in many of the categories of booths and vintage items.
One of our first stops was in the fabric department, which you all know is dear to my heart. Crewel fabrics are back in fashion and are emerging in all colors and designs. Here Eddie talks about this beautiful gold crewel on a cream linen. His recommendation was to use this fabric for pillows and accents in the room to allow for a flexible design scheme. I, of course, would make fabulous drapery panels on some hand finished poles and hardware. More is better, right?

Eddie stopped in a booth filled with vintage linens, including a table cloth like the one he is holding. Eddie is a very energetic and enthusiastic speaker, so taking great photos of him was a challenge at times. (Sorry Eddie--but I really like this vintage tablecloth!) He was so full of information and wanted to make sure that we got as much from our time together as possible.
There were rows of furniture like this chaise that would take on a completely new look with fresh upholstery. He pointed out the benefits of older frames--many are made of solid hardwood. Imagine this horrid old velvet gone and a beautiful new damask. OR how about a fun and fresh contemporary print for a reading area in your home office? This is when redecorating is adventuresome and so much fun! Not to mention green--we are keeping pieces out of the landfills! We have a ton of great upholstery fabrics in our resource room that would absolutely transform this tired piece into a show stopper.
We looked at old prints like this monogram out of an old book. Framing old items that were not originally intended for framing is fun and can create a very personal statement. There were several vendors there with huge selections of prints and old book pages.

This booth was filled with furniture and lighting straight off the boat from France. I traveled to France in June this year and saw first hand the trend of painted furniture in the gray and taupe hues like the chest in this picture. Crystal lighting on metal frames is still strong and creates a soft ambient light in a room.
Fashion is big in France too--don't you love these jeans she is wearing?

A great day--very inspiring. I returned home and rearranged several things. Nothing like a new perspective on what you have to ignite creative energy!

Raised Swags over Shutters and a Master Tub

Many times clients ask about creative ideas for enhancing plantation shutters in their windows. This savvy homeowner wanted the best of both worlds--a beautiful treatment and the ability to open the shutters. This gorgeous treatment was created over a cornice board that in mounted high enough to allow for the shutters to open. The rest of the beautiful silk swags drape into the window to soften the hard lines of the wood louvers.

This custom window treatment was created from embroidered silk that was fully lined and interlined for body and draping quality. Hand finished finials and silk tassel trim complete the look.

Northside Woman reported that after working in corporate banking for 10 years, Youngblood took some time off to raise her family. She always knew she would return to work after her children were grown but the way in which she did was very different from her previous career: Youngblood returned to school at the Art Institute of Atlanta instead of the bank, finding her passion through art and sewing classes. Sewing window treatments for her own home and her friends brought her into business in 1994 as an independent retailer but after attending Exciting Windows! Feathering the Nest for Baby!

I was recently honored to help ready a very special nursery for a client. The photos above are from the finished results. These custom draperies were created for my client's daughter as a gift for her and her soon to arrive baby. How special to be a part of the preparations for a significant event in the life of this family!

These draperies are lined with room darkening fabric and are full enough to cover the windows completely to provide darkness for sleeping--either day or night! The draperies open by hand with a wand to pull open or closed. We also put a room darkening Silhouette shading underneath for an extra layer for insulation and even some noise reduction.

The most fun aspect of the construction of the draperies was adding the plaid banding to the leading edge of each panel and the buttons sewn at the base of each pleat. A little whimsy for a little girl scheduled to arrive in time for Halloween.

Rising energy costs are affecting everyone's pocketbook. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sunny windows make air conditioners work two to three times harder. In colder seasons, heat lost through windows can account for 10 to 25% of your heating bill. Let's first consider some arresting numbers: 40% of the heat that escapes from your home leaves through the windows. And 50% of the solar heat that enters a room comes in through—you guessed it—the windows. Obviously, energy efficient treatments can translate into considerable utility bill savings, especially if your windows are on a cold north exposure in the winter or a sun-saturated west wall in the summer. The most energy efficient treatments feature a honeycomb construction, commonly called a cellular shade. Two Story Draperies: A Tall Tale (not really!)

This client called us to help her with this great room, which at the time, was builder beige and featured 2" wood blinds in the windows. Not her favorite room by any means, and yet was the focal point guests saw when they entered her home. She wanted to make a statement and and warmth and character to the room.

Using digital photography and a sketchbook, we designed this treatment with lots of input from both my client and her husband. We arrived at this classic design that accomplished their request to draw attention to this wonderful fireplace and the beautiful tall lines of this two story room.

For the draperies, we selected a paisley fabric of brick red, brown, and sage green and trimmed it with a wide band of persimmon red velvet down the leading edge. The drapery hardware, in a rich bronze finish, follows the arches of the tall windows and the level line of the side window on the left. Each panel is tied back with matching velvet roping we made.

As part of our consultative services, we assisted with the selection of the new wall color, an earthy tobacco shade, that offsets the cream trim and the artwork above the fireplace. Now everyone entering this room can appreciate the architectural details and the grand scale of these windows!

It is Showtime Again!

This is move in time for the designers of the Roswell Woman's Showcase Home and so we are feverishly making our last minute preparations. We are putting the details on the draperies window treatments for the media room and are excited about the results. Can't wait to show you!

Many of you may remember that we partnered with This Faux House in 2006 to design the Teen Girl's Bedroom, also referred to as the "Barbie Room" because of the fab prints we had on the wall of glamour Barbie. The room was created with wonderful soft greens, blues and parchment colors that invoke calm, serenity, and elegance. My daughter had a hand in the design and fabric choices and the result was a youthful, fresh look. Although the room was intended for a young lady, many of the other "girls" who came through on the tour (you know we are all "girls" until the day we die, no matter our age) agreed that it was the perfect retreat for a girlfriend's weekend stay, a sister's retreat for her visits, or even for Mom's overnight guest room.

We are looking forward to this year's tour. It is always amazing to see this process all come together. Make a point to go. You'll enjoy the decor and variety of creative ideas, and support many deserving charities in our community!

Our New Mobile Showroom...we are on the move!

In January we took the plunge and created our own Mobile Showroom. It's fully stocked with samples of fabrics, trims, hardware, and all our blind, shade, and shutter books. I'm not kidding when I say that there is as much in this showroom as any around town. Every inch of space in the van is full...so many fabrics, so little time!

The bolt stores typically stock just the best sellers, the most predictable colors and combinations, whereas the samples that we carry have many colors, co-ordinates and varieties that never hit the retail floor.

It is just plain fun to bring in fabrics galore and see the way that the right choice can bring the whole room together. Fabrics and color are so energizing, exciting, and inspiring! There are so many great fabrics out there that you might never see or even consider without the convenience of bringing the samples to the room and the window that they intended for.

My new samples for spring will be arriving any day now (I can't wait) and I'll add them to the mix in the "showroom".

In the mean time, if you see me on the road, honk and wave!

Roswell Woman's Club Showcase Home coming in March.....

It's that time again! This year the Roswell Woman's Club Showcase Home Tour features three fabulous estates off Chaffin Road. The tour is open from March 9 to 30, 2008.

We are designing window treatments in the Teen's Media Room which will be furnished by Norwalk Furniture. The room features a tall stacked window on a wall with a vaulted ceiling and rough pine beams. The house we are in is the second home on the tour and is called the"barn house" for all its rustic details and charm. Lots of warm pine floors, painted cabinetry, stacked stone, and expansive ceilings with exposed beams. A very cool house.

Come see the Window Treatment Trunk Show, presented by Youngblood Interiors, on March 18 at 11:30 in the luncheon tent at the end of the tour. You'll see new ideas, fabrics, and trends in window treatments. Admission is included with your house tour tickets.

Out of the Eighties: Before and After Pictures...

We have the unique opportunity to work with many great decorating projects. One of the most gratifying parts of the process is to see the before pictures and compare them to the fabulous results! This one turned out so well that we want to share it with you.

This room, shown here in the pre-renovation stage, was locked in the 80"s. Complete with pink and blue wallpaper and bare windows, this room's potential was hidden in a time warp!

My client, like many of you, saw the potential in the architecture and plunged headlong into redecorating the room. She called us in to coordinate the wall color and add the element that pulled the project together, the window treatments.

One of our challenges here was to treat both the arched windows and the side rectangular window consistently. Don't you think this valance design did just that?
We accented the beautiful arches with relaxed swag treatments that also fit the side window. The fabric we used was a deep ruby red with brown accents brought warmth to the room and was gorgeous with the sable brown Venetian plaster walls.
